Agile Organization SAFe Logistics

SAFe-Transformation of the IT department of a logistics service provider

Client: Logistics service provider

The IT area should be oriented towards agile work, taking into account the individual business context, and the cooperation with the departments should be improved.

Initial situation:

The customer is a provider in European rail transport. Due to the manifold challenges and the increasingly dynamic developments in the logistics market, the departments have to adapt their processes faster and more flexibly. This in turn means that changes to the IT system landscape must be made more quickly and flexibly.

Due to budget overruns, a lack of transparency and failed projects, KEGON decided to work in individual teams even before the agile transformation. These attempts did not have the desired success due to local optimization/lack of coordination. In the course of a new personnel start, it was decided to consistently focus on Scaled Agile in IT with the involvement of the specialist departments.

The KEGON solution:

A first measure was to view development processes holistically and to transform them agilely.

Extensive training measures in the form of in-house training in the areas of Scaled Agile, Leading SAFe, Product Owner and SAFe for Teams familiarized the employees with the Scaled Agile Framework and the procedure.

The framework was interpreted and supplemented in such a way that it is suitable for the specific corporate context with a very low vertical range of manufacture and the associated integration of suppliers.

Another component of the agile transformation was the training and coaching of key roles.

In the next step, the start of an agile release train (ART), including PI planning, was prepared and carried out. In addition, Inspect and Adapt workshops were established at the end of each Program Increment.
